Thieves who raided a Greggs bakery in a busy shopping precinct made off with a safe containing £5,000.

Shoppers have reacted with shock at the brazen crime, which took place at the Strathmartine Road Shopping Centre some time between midnight and 6am on Thursday.

Police believe more than one person and a vehicle were involved in the theft.

An investigation is under way and police are looking at CCTV and appealing to members of the public for information.

Regular Greggs customer Kyle Harrower, 21, said: “I’m incredibly shocked. I can’t believe someone would rob a Greggs when there’s a Tesco next door and a Ladbrokes.

“I’m Greggs loyal I’m in there every day for a meal deal.

“Someone told me they had popped the locks and then went out the back with the safe into a car.

“The police have been asking all the local shops for a look at their CCTV.”

Repairmen were also at the shop yesterday afternoon to repair the damaged security.

Jamie Bray, 25, who works in the area, said the break-in was the talk of the precinct.

“Everyone up here’s been talking about it and asking me about it,” he said.

“The repairmen have been in for a couple of hours.

“Most people are upset that a local shop has been broken into and are worried because it’s right next to a school. I’m usually working here and I know Dundee does have crime but not a lot of business break-ins.

“It’s not often you hear about something like this.”

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland is appealing for information after a safe was stolen from a bakery on Strathmartine Road, Dundee, sometime between midnight and 6am on February 25. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.

“We are looking to trace two or more suspects that may have been responsible.”

A spokeswoman for Greggs confirmed there was a break-in to the Strathmartine Road shop, adding: “The police responded to the incident and are investigating.”
