HMS Duncan honour celebrates Dundee’s 200-year naval link

The 200-year relationship between the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee and Admiral Lord Duncan was celebrated after a visit by the current HMS Duncan to Dundee.

Admiral Duncan was made an honorary member of the trades in 1798, one of only five to date to be honoured in the group’s 432-year history.

To cement this connection, HMS Duncan’s commander James Stride and the ship’s commanders of the time, have been granted the same honour.

A presentation of a plaque marking the occasion was made by Deacon Convener Jim Shearer and Past Deacon Convener Alex Coupar.

Cdr Stride was delighted to accept the plaque and a Nine Trades crystal decanter and a print of a RRS Discovery painting by Alex Coupar.

The type-45 destroyer is the seventh ship to bear Admiral Duncan’s name and Cdr Stride is keen to promote her strong heritage with Dundee.

Other honorary trades members are: George Duncan, Lieutenant for County of Angus (1716), the Right Honourable Lord Viscount Duncan of Camperdown and Lundie (1798), the Rt Hon Viscount Robert Dundas Duncan Haldane of Gleneagles (1820), the Rt HonViscount Duncan of Lundie and Gleneagles (1820) and the Rt Hon Earl of Camperdown (1897).
