A former Dundee publican has died suddenly at the age of 82.

William McCulloch, known as Bill, former owner of The Scotsman on Dundee’s Gellatly Street, passed away on September 12 at Royal Victoria Hospital.

He had previously developed the Burrelton Park Hotel in Perthshire before he came to Dundee to run The Scotman with his family.

He retired in 1993 and enjoyed spending half the year with his wife and son in Tenerife and half their time at their Kingoodie home.

Bill’s sister Mary Mooney said he was a “well known character and a perfect host.”

She added: “He was well liked by everyone, friends, family and colleagues. The expression ‘mein host’ sums him up.”

In his youth Bill was a talented sportsman in both boxing and football.

He played for local football clubs including Builders United, Downfield and North End

In his later years he took to playing bowls and was a member of Invergowrie Bowling Club.

Bill was predeceased by his wife Ina (nee Gibb) and is survived by their son Billy.

He also has six siblings, John, Cecilia, Isobel, Mary, Eddie and the late Tommy.

His funeral service for friends and family will be held at Dundee Crematorium on Thursday (24 Sept) at 11am.

Family flowers only but donations can be made to cancer charities at the funeral.
