Two ‘boy racers’ were warned of the dangers of undertaking after they indulged in speeding along the Kingsway while one of them tailgaited the other.
At Dundee Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Sheriff Elizabeth Munro told 20-year-old Liam McMullen and Dion Hayter, who was appearing in court on his 18th birthday, that their driving was “the sort of thing that causes accidents on a daily basis”.
Hayter, of Bulb Park, Newtyle, admitted that on July 19, on the A90 Kingsway between Strathmartine Road and Forfar Road, he drove carelessly at excessive speed and undertook a vehicle.
McMullan, of St Boswell’s Terrace, Dundee, admitted the same charge, with the addition that he tailgaited Hayter’s car.
The court heard the pair had been seen by witnesses in another car who saw the accused coming up behind them at around 2.50pm.
Both accused’s vehicles undertook their car, speeding past them along the nearside carriageway before pulling sharply in front.
The couple slowed down although they were not forced to take evasive action, depute fiscal James Eodanable said.
They then saw them making the same undertaking manoeuvre on another vehicle.
McMullen was “tailgating” Hayter’s car.
Solicitor James Caird, for Hayter, said his client regretted the incident.
Sheriff Munro said: “How many days do you read in the paper about young men like this causing accidents by driving carelessly like this?”
David Duncan, for McMullan, asked the sheriff to impose penalty points so he could re-apply for his licence without being banned.
Sheriff Munro fined Hayter £150 and imposed six penalty points, fining McMullan £220 and imposing eight points.
McMullan’s licence was automatically revoked and he will have to apply for a new licence and must resit his test.
