VIDEO: Shoppers stunned as Carnoustie Musical Society stages flash mob in Overgate

Shoppers in Dundee were left stunned when a flash mob took over the Overgate Shopping Centre.

Two dancers, who had been mingling with shoppers, broke into a choreographed routine to the bemusement of people around them.

As music played, they then pulled other people into the display, which took place on Saturday afternoon.

Carnoustie Musical Society members organised the three minute performance to promote their new show.

Within 24 hours a video of the flash mob had been viewed more than 2,500 times on social media.

They performed four songs from The Reunion, which opens at Carnoustie High School Theatre on March 10.

Society president Mike Burns said: “We want to extend the awareness of our group to outwith Carnoustie and we thought a flash mob was the best way to generate online publicity.

“By the end of the routine we had a large crowd and it led to our largest day of ticket sales.

“We’d like to thank the Overgate for giving us permission.”

Carnoustie councillor Brian Boyd, who is also a member of the group, added: “It was great fun and it made the shoppers smile though unfortunately I ran on at the wrong time.

“Lots of people were taking photographs and videos on their phones.

“Our new show is a Scottish premiere so we felt we needed to do something spectacular to raise interest.”

The Reunion, which is written by Ian Cook and Ian Newton, is financially backed by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, which means that ticket sales can be sold at a reduced price.

The first act of the show is set in a final week of sixth year, with the second act set at a reunion years later.

“It’s a breath of fresh air doing a new show,” added Mike.

“It’s very up to date with bits that will make you laugh and parts that will make you cry.”

Tickets, priced £9 for adults and £8 for concessions, are available by calling 0333 666 3366 or online at www.carnoustiemusical.co.uk.
