Dundee MP calls for No campaign ‘scaremongering’ to end

A senior SNP MP will claim Scotland’s economy has run at a surplus over most of the last 25 years.

Treasury spokesman and Dundee East representative Stewart Hosie will also use two public events to urge pro-Union campaigners to “stop their scaremongering”.

It comes after Scottish Labour’s deputy leader, Anas Sarwar, used a speech in the House of Commons to argue for a No vote in September by citing the achievements of the UK.

Mr Hosie will say: “Since 1980/81 Scotland has generated more than £1,350 per person more in tax on average every year than the UK.

“Over the same period, Scotland’s economy has, on average, run an annual surplus compared to an average annual deficit for the UK.

“And that for the last full year, when Scotland did run a deficit, it wasn’t only smaller than the UK but smaller than the average of the G7 advanced economies and lower than the average of the 36 advanced economies tracked by the IMF.

“Scotland is not only well placed to survive as an Independent country but thrive as one of the world’s wealthiest countries.

“It’s time the No campaign scaremongering ended and an Independent Scotland’s wealth put to good use to help Scotland’s people.”

Mr Sarwar cited the NHS, Welfare State and National Minimum Wage as examples “of the real transformative effect working together across the UK can have”.
