Caird Hall glows red in Scottish Poppy Appeal tribute

The Caird Hall bathed in red light.

One of Dundee’s landmark buildings is being lit up as a tribute to war veterans.

The Caird Hall glowed red last night for the 2015 Scottish Poppy Appeal and will be lit up on most nights until November 11 to raise awareness of the annual fundraising campaign run by charity Poppyscotland.

This year’s campaign theme is ‘donate like you mean it’ and Poppyscotland is aiming to raise as much money as possible to support those in the armed forces community.

A remembrance event will also take place at the Caird Hall on Saturday.

Dundee Lord Provost Bob Duncan, said: “It is extremely important that in Dundee we remember the people who have given their lives for our country.

“We had a fantastic turnout for the Battle of Loos 100th anniversary, so we’re hoping that people will come to Saturday’s event to remember those who died in the First World war too,

“As well as older people, we need the city’s young people to be aware of what the remembrance represents, and to come along on Saturday.

“I think the Caird Hall will look very nice with a red glow, it is very fitting.”

It is the first time the building has been lit up in red by Poppyscotland.

The charity’s head of fundraising Colin Flinn said: “Dundee has been an incredibly generous part of Scotland when it comes to the Poppy appeal.

“Last year Dundee raised £50,000, which is money that is being spent locally.

“For example the Employ-Able initiative is a local project that helps veterans make use of the skills from the military in civilian employment.

“It would be a shame to let their skills go to waste.

“Another project is Asap, which helps veterans with housing and employment issues.

“This year we’re lighting up the Caird Hall to remind Dundonians of our work and to remember all of our veterans.”

People can support this year’s appeal by taking a video or photo selfie using the hashtag #MyPoppyMeans and sharing on social media, as well as donating to Poppyscotland.
