‘He would have been so happy’ widow says new-born daughter is precious reminder of late husband

Jen says baby Lulu James looks just like her father, James, right.
Jen says baby Lulu James looks just like her father, James, right.

The wife of a Dundee man who died suddenly on holiday has told of her joy at giving birth to their son.

James Philps, a member of the family who own home furnishing business Gillies of Broughty Ferry, passed away in Tallinn, Estonia.

But four months after the tragedy, his 27-year-old wife Jen Philps is beaming proudly as she holds her new-born daughter a precious reminder of the man she lost in December.

His daughter, Lulu James, who was born on April 16, has been named after him in tribute.

Jen, a sales assistant from Broughty Ferry, said: “It was so hard when James was no longer here but being pregnant and knowing the baby was coming really helped me through the grief; it kept me busy and took my mind off things.

“Lulu James was born three weeks early, weighing 5lb 10oz. Despite coming slightly early, there were no problems and she’s perfectly healthy.

“Lulu looks just like James and he would have been so happy if he were here to see her. I don’t think I would have got a shot of her I’d have had to wrestle her off him.”

James has three brothers Euan, Andrew and Gavin who Jen described as “over the moon” about Lulu’s arrival.

Her father, who had suffered with viral hepatitis and had a liver transplant in 2007, was just 26 when he passed away during a stag holiday organised for groom Matthew Fairlie and other friends.

James, a keen rugby player who volunteered with the Broughty Ferry lifeboat, worked for his family’s business.

Jen said: “Lulu has been great so far, a really relaxed and happy baby.

“She’s very laidback, just like James was. I’m looking forward to seeing her grow up.”
