A world expert in Nazi history has slammed Dundonians as “violent and abusive” adding such behaviour is expected from a city which backed independence.
Professor Jill Stephenson also branded local citizens “gullible” in a bizarre online rant conflating the case of a drunken thug arrested on an aeroplane with support for a Yes vote.
Andrew Tosh, of Stirling Street, was jailed for nine months after sexually assaulting a female member of cabin crew on a flight from Glasgow to Turkey. There is no indication about if or how he voted in the referendum.
Professor Stephenson tweeted: “On the news the idiot who had to be offloaded from an aircraft when drunk, abusive and violent. He’s from Dundee. Yes city. No surprise.”
The academic later added: “I’m suggesting that people who uncritically believe SNP lies are gullible. More in Dundee than elsewhere.”

Opposing MSPs condemned the comments.
Labour’s Jenny Marra said: “Tarring our city with a bad reputation just because of the actions of one man is not on. An educated historian should know better than to make sweeping generalisations about our community.
“Yes and No voters alike in our city are, in the vast majority, law-abiding citizens.”
SNP Dundee West representative Joe FitzPatrick added: “I’d encourage her to come to Dundee and meet our wonderful people and experience first-hand our city’s cultural transformation and the positivity that is moving Dundee forward.”
