People of all ages camped out in their cars to be the first in line to secure a house at the new Western Gateway.

Although none of the homes is actually built, work has started on the site of phase one of the Dykes of Gray village with many people trying to reserve one of the first 94 homes.

The young woman who was first in line took shifts camping out with her mother from 4pm on Friday to secure her home shortly before 10am on Saturday.

Others pitched up later and several spent the night in their cars. Number six in the queue was a young family looking to buy their first family home.

The family stayed on site from 7pm and said at least seven other groups of homebuyers spent the night with them.

Only 12 houses, the first expected to be completed, were available for sale as part of the first release at the weekend.

The most popular house, the three bedroom Huntly, was the favourite among those queuing, although there are only four such homes in phase one, two of them in the first 12 due to be built by the end of this year.

Tricia Malek, sales director at homes developer Springfield, said they had seen overwhelming demand and were grateful for people’s interest in the development.

She said: “Many people slept in their cars, which can’t have been comfortable.”

The site to the north of the Swallow roundabout in Dundee is just minutes from the city and Ms Malek said also offered good connections to others parts of Scotland including Angus and Perth.

By the end of the weekend, Springfield had taken five reservations for the first batch of houses and nine earlybird reservations for other homes in phase one. A total of 104 people visited the sales site.

The company also arranged for The Picnic Basket catering van from the Dundee Technology Park to serve free hot food and drinks.
