Globetrotting fan Tommy has capital idea to help Dundee FC

A lifelong Dundee FC fan living and working in Cairo has come up with a novel way of raising money to help the crisis-hit club.

Tommy Thomson (52) who was brought up in Fintry and educated at Linlathen High School is travelling through five capital cities in four days on a trip to Bolivia to inspect a rare type of marble.

During his whirlwind journey, Tommy intends to grab photographs of himself in his full Scottish attire at landmarks like the Pyramids and the Eiffel Tower, collecting donations and memorabilia to give to the club to auction when he returns to Dundee.

Tommy, who has worked for the past four years as a construction manager in the Middle East for an Athens firm, contacted The Courier and offered to send pictures from each of the landmarks and update readers with his progress over the next few days.

From his office in Cairo, Tommy explained, “Dundee FC has, like many others, been a part of my life for 45 years ever since my brother Johnny first took me to Dens in 1965.

“I have supported the Dees through thick and thin mostly thin and the current situation has troubled me, even more so than 2003, as it appears the threat of extinction is very real this time.

“Therefore, I want to use this trip to raise money to contribute in a small way to help the club to survive.”

Tommy added, “I’ll be carrying my new copy of Up Wi’ The Bonnets (the history of Dundee FC) and try to get a few famous signatures.

“On the way back I’m going to two football matches in Argentina at the weekend so I’ll be able to grab some shirts and get them signed, hopefully.

“During my travels I also hope to raise money by charging a small donation to those who would be brave enough to want a picture with this Scotsman in a ‘skirt’, as my Egyptian friends have fondly referred to me.”
