Fractured pelvis no handicap to golf-mad Connie Baxter

Many older golfers would give up their sport after suffering a fractured pelvis but a quick round was the perfect way for Broughty Ferry woman Connie Baxter to celebrate her 92nd birthday on Friday.

Connie suffered the injury around three months ago but has refused to let it get in the way of her favourite pastime, which she enjoys at the Ladies’ Panmure Golf Club in Monifieth.

There is even some suggestion the setback may have enhanced her performance, after she and daughter Anne McMillan scooped first prize in a recent competition.

The Albert Gardens resident is not the only nonagenarian to be gracing the greens on the Ashludie course as Noreen Mitchell (90) recently enjoyed her landmark birthday as a member of the club.

Both ladies were out for a round on Friday morning, before meeting up with friends at the clubhouse to celebrate Connie’s birthday.

Anne said her mother still has a keen mind, enjoys a game of bridge and still drives both on and off the golf course.

She added, “She has golfed all of my lifetime and played a lot when she was a young girl but not so much when we were children.

“I think she just thoroughly enjoys playing and being with people who are interested enough to go round the course and have a game. She and I won the captain’s day prize not long ago and it was quite a first for her.

“I asked her on the seventh if she wanted to carry on and she said yes. She said the same on the 13th and we ended up completing all 18 holes and winning the game.

“A lot of the others felt they had to carry on and finish just because she had managed to get all the way round.”

Connie golfed as a young child and has been involved with the ladies’ club in Monifieth for more than 30 years. She returned to the sport at the age of 59, once her children had left home.

The golf club has several members over the age of 80 and regularly runs nine-hole competitions for the group.
