Thieves scramble away with 700 eggs from farm in Fowlis

Thieves have stolen over 700 eggs from a farm in Fowlis.

The raiders broke into sheds at Cransley Farm last Friday morning. The break-in will cost JSR Services in excess of £300.

Owner John Ratson blamed the theft of the 720 eggs on the recession.

“It’s a sign of the times,” he said.

“It’s a lot of money that I’ve lost and it will have been damaging for the birds’ welfare to have people breaking into these sheds.”

There are around 1,500 hens on Cransley Farm, which lies between Liff and Fowlis, with a little under the same number of eggs being produced every day.

Farm manager Stephen Smith said this was the first time anyone had stolen eggs from the site.

He said: “It happened in the early hours of Friday morning.

“I came in first thing in the morning and the shed doors had been broken open with a crow bar.”

A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said: “Anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity or people in the area should contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.”
