A would-be thief sustained a suspected broken back as he tried to run away from police, Dundee Sheriff Court has heard.
Ronald McPhee Kinmond (39), Cleghorn Street, appeared in court on Monday in a wheelchair after badly injuring himself during the escape bid on Sunday.
The court heard he leapt over a wall which had a 13-foot drop and was so badly injured he had to be taken to Ninewells Hospital.
He admitted attempting to break into the premises owned by Sense Scotland, Reid Square, Hilltown, smashing a window and reaching inside, attempting to open the window and attempting to break in to the premises, while on bail.
Depute fiscal Carol Whyte said the incident happened around 5.45pm on Sunday when a nearby resident heard glass breaking and saw Kinmond reaching into the window.
Two police officers in nearby Hill Street also heard the smash and one arrived to see Kinmond reaching inside the premises.
He ran off and the officer gave chase, with Kinmond falling and injuring himself.
Solicitor advocate James Laverty said there was a fear that Kinmond has broken his back.
“He was taken to Ninewells Hospital and released, but he went back up again for X-rays and is to return again this week,” he said.
He said Kinmond had been receiving treatment from the Drug Problem Centre which appeared to be going well until the start of this month when he and his partner had split up.
“It’s a revolving door whenever they split he seeks solace in alcohol and valium tablets. He has no recall of what happened yesterday,” Mr Laverty said.
Sheriff Munro remanded Kinmond in custody and deferred sentence for reports to September 29.
