Whitehall Theatre staging Sound of Music in bid to save ‘local treasure’

A cash-strapped theatre is putting on a production to raise funds to keep it open.

The Whitehall Theatre went bust last year but the curtain did not come down because it was taken over by new management.

The business still struggles, however, and all profits from a new staging of the Sound of Music will go directly to the theatre.

Technical services manager Jen Shearer said: ”Many people are still not aware that the theatre is still open under new management after it went into administration last year and we very much need to get the message out to the public.

”The theatre is mostly staffed by volunteers, such is the love of the Whitehall by local people. If more people were encouraged to come along, or even take part, we could help secure a future for this local treasure.”

Rehearsals began on Saturday and production team Kenny Christie and Ian Strachan put the cast through their paces.

Maria will be played by Jenna Davidson and children will take the parts of the Von Trapp family.

The production will run from February 21-23.
