The new £3.5 million bridge at Seabraes has opened, with a trio on their way to work being the first to cross.

Connecting the West End with Riverside Drive, the 54-metre span will be officially opened by the Scottish Government’s Transport Minister in August or September, but was opened to the public earlier following nine months of construction.

Darryl McDonald, Avril Jardine and Graeme Wolks were the first to cross the 70-tonne structure.

Graeme said: “It’s a really cool looking bridge, I’m happy to see what they’ve done with it.

“We just saw it was open and asked if we could go up over it. It should save us a little time in the mornings as well.”

Previously the only detour was a 1,500-metre detour around Dundee station and when combined with the recently constructed steps leading up into the west end will allow for access to the Dundee university campus.

Passersby were so enamoured with the bridge member of university staff David Paterson took photos from the glass-sided bridge without crossing fully towards Riverside.

He said: “I’ve been watching it take shape with great interest and now it’s finally open it’s really something.

“I’m pleased because they could have put something less interesting up but it’s a real landmark.”

City development convener Will Dawson said: “The Seabraes footbridge is an important part of the waterfront development and I am delighted it was opened today.

“With its stunning design and strategic location, it is sure to become a landmark in no time.

“Thanks to the new bridge pedestrians and cyclists will get easy access from one of the main arteries of Dundee to the heart of the waterfront.”

The project is being funded from a range of sources, including the Vacant and Derelict Land Fund, Scottish Enterprise, Cycling Walking and Safer Streets, Dundee City Council and the developers of the new flats.
