‘Maniac’ learner driver crashed into vehicle while fleeing police

A learner driver drove at more than twice the speed limit trying to escape from the police, before smashing into another vehicle and injuring the occupants.

At Dunfermline Sheriff Court, Mark Lambert was told he faces a jail sentence for offences which occurred on the B920 Lochgelly to Lochore road.

Lambert, 22, of Polton Avenue Road, Bonnyrigg, admitted that on November 15 he drove dangerously on that road and while being pursued by a police vehicle, drove in excess of 70mph in a 30mph limit, repeatedly crossed the centre line of the road into the path of oncoming traffic, causing drivers to take evasive action, and collided with a vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles and injury to two people.

He also admitted that as the holder of a provisional licence, he failed to display learner plates, drove without insurance and was in possession of cocaine.

Depute fiscal Dev Kapadia said at about 1pm police saw Lambert driving too close to the vehicle in front. He did a U-turn and sped off when they flashed their lights for him to stop.

Mr Kapadia said: “There was another person in the accused’s car and said he was driving like a maniac.”

Other vehicles took evasive action but Lambert’s driving led to a collision.

Sheriff Craig McSherry called for reports but said: “A custodial sentence is likely.” He banned Lambert from driving. Sentencing will take place on March 11.
