The officer co-ordinating the police inquiry, Detective Chief Inspector Colin Beattie, said, “The two men subjected the staff to an extremely frightening ordeal but fortunately they were not injured.
“We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of the bookmakers about 7pm or who may have information that could assist us with this investigation to contact the police in the strictest confidence on 0845 600 5702.”
Shocked customers spoke of a community feel to those who put bets on at the site.
Lind Campbell (75), said, “This is a good bookies where most people know each other we don’t put up with any nonsense. I’m very shocked to hear this.”
Jim Burnett (65), said, “You get to know most of the people who come here.
“Occasionally you see some shady characters playing the bandit machines but you don’t expect this.”
It is the second incident in the area in a week. Last Thursday, a thief attempted to rob staff at the Scotmid store in East Balbridgeburn Drive at around 9pm.
