Police in Kirkcaldy have launched an appeal after a highly-dangerous incident in which a bus driver was deliberately targeted by a laser pen.
The driver managed to retain control of the bus despite being targeted by the light.
The incident happened on Monday shortly before 8pm as the bus made its way along Kinghorn Road. It is thought the person aiming the beam was standing at the side of the road.
PC Craig Stirling, Fife Constabulary’s safer transport liaison officer, said, “Fife has seen a number of recent incidents involving the use of laser pens being used to shine at the drivers of moving buses.
“Young people are reminded these items are not toys and if used like this the consequences could be serious.
“The potential for serious injuries or fatalities means that any person responsible for this type of crime will be robustly dealt with.”
Sarah Longair, operations director for Stagecoach East Scotland, said, “The safety of our staff and customers is paramount to Stagecoach and incidents of this nature are a worry as they can be extremely dangerous.
“We are fortunate so far that no serious injuries have been caused, but it is vital that youngsters realise the risks and understand that action will be taken for the use of laser pens in this manner.”
Anybody with information that can help with the investigation is asked to contact Fife Police on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
