RAF Leuchars gears up for conflict training exercises
ByNews reporter
Skies above RAF Leuchars will see more flying operations than usual over the coming days as the base prepares to support a major defence exercise.
Typhoon aircraft of 6 Squadron will be taking part in Exercise Joint Warrior between April 16 and 26. It is descried as a UK-wide tri-service, multi-national operation aimed at brushing up the skills pilots might need to use in conflicts.
The Leuchars aircraft will be part of a mixed multi-nation air contingent that will focus on operational training for aircrews and will include long-range attack missions involving air-to-air refuelling support, close air support for troops on the ground, maritime attack and support missions.
For the duration of the exercise the station will also host Hawk aircraft of 100 Squadron, normally based at RAF Leeming, as well as a detachment of French Alpha jets. The Hawk and Alpha aircraft are expected to arrive at the end of this week.
There are no plans for any weekend or night flying from RAF Leuchars as part of the exercise. Should that change, the base has said it will notify the public.
