Fife man attacked friend by mistake in house party ‘melee’

A drunken fight at a house party ended with the host being punched and struck with a bottle.

Greig Laird, a 26-year-old offshore worker, of Elder Place, Rosyth, admitted that on July 4 at Knockhouse Gardens, Crossford, he assaulted Jordan Dawson by punching him on the head whereby both men fell to the floor, then struck him with a glass bottle, causing it to break, all to his injury.

At Dunfermline Sheriff Court, depute fiscal Louise Graham said Laird had been drinking in Dunfermline town centre and later went to a party at a friend’s house.

“A fight broke out between three unknown males and the complainer stepped in to defuse the situation and was punched once in the face,” said Ms Graham.

“He was punched by the accused, who did not realise he had assaulted his friend. Both fell to the floor and the accused was still unaware it was his friend. He picked up a bottle and struck him with it on the arm.”

The victim was taken to hospital and needed stitches.

Defence solicitor Stephen Morrison said: “The complainer was, and is, Mr Laird’s friend.

“The two of them and others were in each other’s company and ended up at the complainer’s address.

“He was residing with his grandparents and mother. They were away on holiday and he held an impromptu house party. Word spread and the house filled up with people, both invited and uninvited.”

Mr Morrison said “everybody was extremely drunk” and that his client had been “appalled” he had behaved in this way.

Sheriff Craig McSherry fined Laird £600 and ordered him to pay £250 compensation.
