A man has been charged with murder after the discovery of a body in a Fife park.
The 24-year-old man is due to appear in Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Monday.
The body of the unidentified man, believed to be in his teens or early twenties, was found at 5am on Friday in Riverside Park, Glenrothes, known locally as the Town Park.
A police spokesman said on Friday night: “Following inquiries in relation to the suspicious death of a man whose body was discovered in the Town Park area of Glenrothes around 5am today, a 24-year-old male has been arrested and charged with murder.”
Superintendent Milton said: “Inquiries are continuing in the Glenrothes area and there is an increased police presence. However, I would like to reassure the public that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident at this stage.”
Police said the identity of the dead man would be released once family had been informed.
Patricia Tierney, the owner of a burger van at the park, said: “It’s a shock to have something like this happen in the park.
“It’s quite scary to be here. I was asking the police if I was going to be safe to work here as you just don’t know who’s lurking around.
“When I turned up this morning I saw the bridge shut and the police all milling around, then the fire brigade arrived.
“I’ve been here three years and there’s been nothing like this. I see the same people all the time and I thought it might make people think twice about coming here today.”
She added: “I’m happy that the police are here as it’s making me feel a lot safer.”
Glenrothes West and Kinglassie councillor Bill Brown admitted the area had issues with crime but praised the police response to the incident.
Prior to the arrest, he said: “I understand the police were on the scene quickly and they have a couple of addresses of people that they are interested in talking to.
“I think it will be quite distressing for the people in the area. There have been issues around there.
“A couple of months ago there were raids on properties near the Glenwood Centre to do with drugs.
“I’m not saying this is drugs related but for people in that area it might also not be too much of a shock to them, to be honest.”
The police cordoned off a large swathe of Riverside Park stretching around the River Leven, which flows through the park.
Officers were stationed in pockets from a children’s playpark at Willow Crescent, out to the B969 leading up to the Leslie Roundabout and down the side of the river which runs adjacent to Leslie Road.
The White Bridge, running over the cordoned-off park area, was also blocked off by police to prevent traffic crossing in either direction.
