LISTEN: Lochgelly pupils’ ‘Wee Westie Christmas Message’ deserves to top the charts

With Christmas Day less than a fortnight away, the annual assault on the eardrums threatens to continue unabated.

Though the bass may have the strength of a soggy piece of cardboard, there can be no mistaking the tinny notes chiming through the supermarket speaker system.

The Pogues, Whizzard, Wham! and, of course, the ubiquitous Slade taunt the senses wherever you go.

Radio, television, advertising, shops; there is simply no escaping the aural onslaught from the titans of Christmas pop.

However, pupils from one Fife primary school are attempting to end the monopoly of the traditional yuletide hits, by launching their own sensational bid for festive chart glory.

“The whole school was involved,” said Morag Steele, headteacher at Lochgelly West Primary School.

“We decided to make a Christmas album and sell it to raise funds to do up the school grounds and every pupil has taken part.

“We worked with a company called Beatbox and all of the pupils were involved in writing the lyrics by taking a section of the song each.

“Recording it in the hall was a bit of a challenge but everybody did so well in the end.”

Titled “A Wee Westie Christmas Message,” the original song forms part of a Christmas album available for sale to parents and local businesses.

Over 170 copies have already been pre-ordered, while several local businesses will also play the album in the lead-up to Christmas.

Asked where she thought her pupils’ song stood in the list of classic Christmas anthems, Mrs Steele showed no lack of confidence in their performance.

“At the top, of course!” she said.

“There was definitely a few tears in the parents’ eyes when we performed it for them.

“It really was a team effort and everybody involved worked so hard so it is definitely number one in Lochgelly.”
