Stance over potential Glenrothes library closure draws criticism

The chairman of Glenrothes area committee has come under fire over library closures.

At the last area committee meeting, resident Leslie Bain called for councillors to agree that the proposed closure of Glenwood Library should be stopped.

Councillor Julie Ford said: “I was utterly appalled to find them essentially refusing to answer whether they were for or against closing Glenwood Library, a library which is in their own ward.”

Her SNP colleague, Craig Walker, said: “I am very surprised that having allowed Mr Bain’s question to be included in the agenda, the chair of the committee then chose to put through an amendment which ensured the question wasn’t answered.

“Glenwood Library is a vital service to its local community and it’s extremely disappointing that the area committee couldn’t speak with a unified voice opposing its threatened closure.”

Committee chairman Bill Brown said: “I do not believe that any councillor in the Glenrothes area wants any library in the area to close.

“The Labour administration needs to reduce spending across the council because of the £77 million shortfall.

“The Cultural Trust was told that its funding was being reduced by more than £800,000. The board of the trust made decisions on how that money could be saved, with more than half of the savings coming from proposed library closures.

“I think that everyone understands that councils throughout the UK are having to make difficult decisions to save money.

“The opposition will always blame the party in administration for any cuts or closures.”
