People across Tayside and Fife woke to intense rain, thunder and lightning on Sunday, in strong contrast to Saturday’s high temperatures and cloudless skies.

The heavy downpour caused localised flooding throughout the region with over an inch of rain in many parts. The deluge led to problems on the roads, especially in Angus and Dundee.

An 82-year-old woman was rushed to hospital after her car overturned on the A935 Montrose to Brechin road. The pensioner had been travelling with a 74-year-old man when the vehicle flipped over.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after a member of the public raised the alarm. On arrival they found the man had freed himself from the car, however the elderly woman remained trapped inside.

Two fire and rescue crews from Montrose attended armed with cutting gear. Firefighters worked to free the woman who was treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene and taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee as a precaution.

The road was closed for an hour and traffic diversions were in place until a recovery truck arrived to remove the vehicle. There were no other vehicles involved and nobody else was injured.

Meanwhile, police attended flooding incidents on the A92 at Ethiebeaton and at Northwater Bridge near Brechin, with both issues reported to Angus Council.

Roads in the Rosehill area of Montrose also suffered heavy flooding and some routes were down to one lane.

In Dundee, police were called to flooding in Buttars Loan and parts of other city roads including Strathmartine Road, Dock Street and Dundee Road in Broughty Ferry were submerged.

A family fun day at Newgate Bowling Club in Arbroath was rained-off for the first time in 20 years. The emergency services in Fife and Perthshire did not report any major weather-related incidents.
