The sun was shining and the crowds were in high spirits at Burntisland Highland Games on Monday.

Thousands descended on Burntisland Links for the town’s 361st games.

The second-oldest event of its kind in the world, locals and visitors alike mingled at one of the most popular events on Fife’s social calendar.

That popularity was evident, with the traditional dancing competition having to begin two hours ahead of the event’s formal opening time at noon due to the high volume of entries.

Local resident Laura Wilson said: “It’s great for the town. There’s a real buzz about the place.Photo gallery: Burntisland Highland Games“Everyone comes out for the Highland Games it’s the one thing that everyone attends every year.

“It’s great weather as well, which has helped as it’s rained in the past few years.”

The popularity of the event reaches far beyond Fife, with Glasgow resident Marie McDermott adding: “The kids love it here and it’s a brilliant day out when the sun is shining. You don’t need to go abroad when the weather is like this.”
