A body has been discovered in an area where a university lecturer was reported missing two months ago.

Police have said that a body of a man was found near the mountain Bla Bheinn on the Isle of Skye on Sunday afternoon and the family of Dr Oliver Smith, 33, have been told about the discovery.

“Following a search, the body of a male was recovered from the area of Bla Bheinn during the afternoon of Sunday 2 June 2013. The family of missing person Oliver Smith have been informed of this development.

“Arrangements are being made for a formal identification,” said a police statement.

Dr Smith, a lecturer in Russian at the University of St Andrews’ School of Modern Languages, failed to return to his holiday accommodation on the Isle of Skye on Saturday April 6 after setting out to climb Bla Bheinn in the morning.

According to police reports he planned to walk via Loch Coruisk and the coastal path to Elgol. Mountain rescue teams were involved with the search at that time along with police, sniffer dogs and a coastguard helicopter.
