Building society staff face the threat of redundancy as a financial giant axes its regional brands.
The Dunfermline Building Society is one of three names to go as Nationwide Building Society integrates its operations under a single banner.
The 144-year-old society, founded in Dunfermline and until recently Scotland’s largest building society, has 32 branches including several in Fife and Tayside.
Also to be rebranded as Nationwide are the Cheshire and Derbyshire building societies.
Around half of the three societies’ branches will be converted into Nationwide branches, with the remainder closed or integrated with a neighbouring branch.
Nationwide admitted redundancies would be necessary but insisted it would redeploy employees where possible.
It was unable to say last night how many staff would be affected.
Dunfermline Building Society was rescued from collapse in 2009 by Nationwide and the Bank of England.
Nationwide said that although the Dunfermline had been stabilised, it had offered a restricted product range and rebranding it as Nationwide would deliver a better customer experience and operational efficiencies.
It said Caledonia House in Dunfermline will remain a vital administration and customer service centre, with around 300 staff.
