ONE OF Scotland’s top museums has landed in a bunker with its bid to create a rooftop cafe.
The British Golf Museum, rated as a five-star attraction by VisitScotland, wanted to expand its premises on the Bruce Embankment upwards.
However, Fife Council’s North-East Fife area committee decided the extension would impinge upon a view of the world-famous West Sands beach it was designed to overlook.
It refused planning permission on the grounds of detrimental impact on the landscape setting and the neighbouring Royal and Ancient Golf Club listed building.
Councillor Dorothea Morrison led the opposition and said: “There was no problem with the design of the cafe but it really would have taken away from the wonderful view.”
Two decades ago the original design for the museum itself was declined planning permission, despite it winning a competition run by the R&A Trust.
Mrs Morrison added: “Every single time I have passed over the years I have been glad that decision was taken.”
