The family and friends of a Fife teenager who died suddenly last year will mark the first anniversary of his death this month with a charity night.

Struan Gallacher died in his sleep at his Thornton home on May 27, two days before his 14th birthday. He was born with hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain, which caused complications throughout his life including learning and behavioural difficulties.

He and his family received much support from the community and the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA).

Coaltown of Balgonie community hall will host an event in aid of the SSBA on May 28, and Struan’s mum Margaret told The Courier she had been touched by the amount of interest shown.

“We are doing a raffle and we must have had donations from every shop in Thornton,” she said. “Prizes include free manicures, haircuts, MoTs and a fish tea from both chip shops. Knockhill has sent two family passes. I can’t believe it.”

Friends and family have organised a buffet and local band Brass Monkeys will provide the entertainment.

“People were very supportive when we lost Struan but it’s amazing that a year down the line they are still doing things,” Mrs Gallacher added.

Next weekend’s charity night will run from 7pm till midnight. Tickets cost £5 for adults and are available to under-16s for a donation.

They can be bought at the door on the night or by calling Mrs Gallacher on 07919 141841.
