Kris Miller, Courier, 18/09/11. Picture today shows police presence on Stirling Street, Dundee after Cathie Henderson (84) was attacked on her doorstep and subjected to a violent mugging in her home last night.

A man has been charged in connection with a fatal accident in Leslie at the weekend.

Local man Stephen James McCann, who was 20, died at the scene after being struck by a car on the A911 near Greenside at around 3.15am on Saturday.

Police say a man has been charged in connection with the accident and is due to appear at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.

Detective Inspector Stuart Welsh said investigations are continuing and witnesses are still being sought.

He said: “We are following several lines of enquiry. However, we still need vital information about the whereabouts and occupants of the silver Ford Focus which was involved in this accident.

“It is believed that this car may have been in both Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes prior to this accident happening. Anyone who has any information is urged to contact us as soon as possible.”

Mr McCann’s family have been too upset to talk about his death, but issued a short statement through police saying: “Stephen was a hard-working popular young man in the village with a large circle of friends who had always worked since leaving school, and will he be missed by family and friends.”

There has been an outpouring of tributes on Facebook and flowers and messages were left near the scene of the tragedy.

Friends described Mr McCann sometimes known as Jeffrey to those close to him as a great person. The former Glenwood High School pupil was a fan of Celtic Football Club and was well known locally.

Paul Thompson wrote: ”Lost my best friend last night. Can’t believe it. Want to thank everyone for their messages really kind but don’t spend time worrying about me, just say a prayer for someone who was like a brother to me.”

And a friend wrote: ”Stephen was a much loved guy and everyone knew him. He was so funny, always knew how to make you smile. If you were down, knew what to say.”

Another said: ”Everyone loves him and is sad to see him go.”
