Top field of athletes ready to compete for Cairn O’Mohr’s Golden Haggis

The Perthshire winery that brought the world a bottle smashing championship and all manner of exotic local tipples has invented a new sport “to raise a laugh at a dreary time of year.”

Cairn O’Mohr will host the inaugural “ploughed field sprint” on Saturday, with the newly created and no doubt soon-to-be prestigious Golden Haggis up for grabs.

The latest wacky event is the brainchild of winery owner Ron Gillies, who joined participants for a trial run this week.

He promised, “It’ll be fun to be in and great to watch. People will fall in the mud.”

The creator of “Gings wi’ Haggis” wine said the new “sport” is a perfect antidote to winter blues and accompaniment to Burns-themed merriment. It will see competitors scramble 400 metres across a wet, muddy ploughed field and back in their bid for glory, or should one say glaur-y…

Ron said, “It’s something I’ve been wanting to try for years and I’ve been provoked into finally giving it a go.

“Associating it with Burns is appropriate, given his rustic upbringing and attachment to the soil.

“It’s also a good time of year for the event with plenty of muddy wet ploughed fields and also cheering up a dreary time of year with some post-festive physical fun.”

Golden Haggis trophies will be handed out to winners of three classes. The fun starts at the winery at 2pm and participants of all ages are welcome to try their luck.
