A horrific road accident in Perthshire has claimed the lives of two people.

The two-vehicle collision happened in wet conditions on the A94 road out of Scone towards Balbeggie, near the entrance to Perth Airport, on Friday.

Nearby householders rushed to help at the scene after they heard the crash. Passing motorists also stopped to comfort the injured before the arrival of the emergency services.

Shortly after 11am a silver Skoda Roomster and a silver Ford Fusion Zetec collided, fatally injuring a 63-year-old woman passenger in the Skoda and the 78-year-old man who was driving the Ford.

The 67-year-old man driving the Skoda suffered head injuries, while a 70-year-old woman, a front-seat passenger in the Fusion, was not seriously hurt. Both were taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Details of the deceased will not be released until they have been formally identified and next of kin informed. It is not known if the victims are local.

One man who lives at the airport said he heard a bang but did not realise there had been a crash until he heard the sirens of the emergency services.

”I went out there were already a number of people at the scene but there wasn’t a great deal I could do,” he said.

Witnesses said they understood that one of the vehicles may have been emerging from the airport. The road remained closed for several hours while the wreckage of the cars was removed along with debris which was strewn across the road.

Among those who were at the airport when the accident happened was Mike McWilliam, general manager with site owners Morris Leslie.

”It is a tragedy that makes the blood run cold,” Mr McWilliam said, adding that his thoughts were with the families of the victims.

Anyone who can help the police investigation should call 0300 111 2222.
