A drug addict who ransacked children’s lockers at Perth Leisure Centre has been jailed for eight months.

Alan Brown was high on valium when he swiped £40 from the lockers as the children attended a disco night at the leisure centre.

Brown, 34, raked through 13 lockers, which contained money ranging from £2 to £7, and pocketed the cash.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that Brown, who has a record for theft, was spotted on CCTV acting suspiciously around the lockers in the changing area.

Depute discal Rebecca Kynaston said: “It was a disco night at the pool for children. They had left various items in the lockers.

“When he was approached by staff and asked what he was doing the accused said he had gotten 50p stuck in his locker and jammed his finger.”

Solicitor Linda Clark said her client had taken a quantity of valium and had no recollection of what he had done.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said: “Mr Brown would have known the consequences of what would happen if he took valium.”

Brown, Anchor House, Crieff Road, Perth, admitted stealing from 13 lockers at Perth leisure pool on March 12.

Sheriff Foulis said: “You’ve engaged well with regard to the community payback order according to the report.

“One of the purposes of a community payback order is not just unpaid work or help in the community, it is to ensure you don’t offend again.

“Little after a fortnight after being put on an order you were in Perth leisure pool and committed this offence. In my view, having regard to your record, custody is the only option.”
