Bye bye Balado T in the Park ready for ‘poignant’ farewell festival

As festival-goers from across the country prepare to descend on Kinross-shire this weekend, T in the Park organisers say they expect the event to be “poignant”.

The festival will say “bye bye Balado” on Sunday before a move to a new site at Strathallan Castle next year.

However, festival director Geoff Ellis expects this year’s event to be a triumph for the Scottish music industry.

He said: “This is our last year in Kinross so the big focus is giving Balado a fantastic send-off.

“We have artists such as Biffy Clyro, Calvin Harris, Paolo Nutini, Arctic Monkeys and Rudimental it’s going to be very hard to top that. It’s one of the strongest line-ups we’ve ever had.

“Three out of the four headliners are Scottish, which is the first time that’s ever happened, and they are there on merit. It’s a great thing for Scottish music and shows what great shape it’s in.

“I think there will be a tinge of sadness that we are saying farewell to Balado but I think everyone will massively enjoy the occasion and look forward to the move to the new site next year.”

Mr Ellis said preparation is almost complete before doors open to campers later today.

“The ground is in fantastic condition, we had a little bit of rain yesterday but not a lot and it’s so well drained that it’s really firm under foot.

“Most things are the same (as last year) but we have a new stage in the Sunset Strip, called The Palm, which is built to resemble a South Beach (Florida) hotel and is art deco style.”

However, revellers have been advised to pack their wet-weather gear as forecasters say a deluge is expected during the festivities.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “It’s a wee bit early to be sure how it will turn out but it does look like it will be fairly cloudy with an increasing chance of rain as the weekend progresses. Some showers will be quite heavy.

“The temperatures will be reasonable in the high teens to twenties. It will be quite humid but there is a significant threat of rain so people should pack brollies and wellies.”
