Fatal accident inquiry will investigate Fife dad’s death after car crash

The sudden death of a young Tayport dad, who suffered severe injuries in a horrific road crash, will be investigated by a court.

A fatal accident inquiry has been ordered to establish the circumstances around Owen Bissett’s death.

The 25-year-old died in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, a week after he was involved in a head-on collision between a car and a lorry.

The accident happened just after 9am on November 20 last year, on the A85 at Gilmerton in Perthshire.

Mr Bissett was freed from the wreckage of his Honda Civic by firefighters using hydraulic cutting gear. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance under a police escort.

The 54-year-old truck driver declined any medical treatment.

It was reported at the time that Mr Bissett had been in a coma in intensive care, where surgeons battled in vain to save his life.

He was pronounced dead on the afternoon of Wednesday November 26.

A police spokesman said following the announcement: “Mr Bissett’s family are understandably upset by their sudden loss and have said that he will be greatly missed.

“Inquiries into the full set of circumstances of the incident are ongoing.

“As with all sudden deaths a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Mr Bissett lived with his fiance and their young daughter on Elizabeth Street. The family has never spoken publicly about the tragedy.

Now the procurator fiscal’s office has announced details of an inquiry into Mr Bissett’s death, which will be held at Perth Sheriff Court on November 4.

A preliminary hearing to set out a timetable and establish potential witnesses will take place in October.
