Former soldier being chased for hundreds of pounds by gas firm despite having no supply at home

A former soldier is being chased by a gas firm for hundreds of pounds, despite never having a supply connected to his house.

Craig Donald, who has lived in his council property for five years, has been sent several bills for up to £700 by SSE.

The Perth-based company has even threatened him with legal action to disconnect the non-existent supply at Tulloch Terrace in Perth.

However the 41-year-old, who served in the Royal Corps of Transport, said although there is an external meter, the firm was never able to fully connect a gas supply as until recently he was working away from home as a long-distance lorry driver.

“It’s just a one-bedroomed place but I was just living here at the weekends,” Mr Donald said.

“They wrote to me wanting to fit a meter but I told them I didn’t know where I was going to be.

“Since then I’ve received a letter telling me I need to pay £708.05. That’s the most expensive one but I have others for £300, £500.

“They’ve gone to the court to get an entrance warrant so they can just come in to disconnect the gas. But I don’t have gas I never had it fitted.

“I have no idea where they are getting this idea from. I’ve been phoning them up and telling them this but there’s no cooperation whatsoever .

“It’s like banging my head off a brick wall. I’m angry.

“I’ve tried to be a nice guy. I’m ex-army so I’ve had to mind my Ps and Qs while dealing with them on the phone but they never address the issue, they just argue.

“I want to put the gas in but I am worried they will put in a higher tariff on my bills to claim back the money.”

SSE has indicated it may clear Mr Donald’s bill but said it needs to clarify some details with him in order to do so.

A spokesman for the firm said: “We are keen to resolve this situation with Mr Donald and would urge him to contact us at the earliest possible opportunity.”
