A rare water fountain was unveiled at Pitlochry railway station as part of celebrations to mark 150 years since the completion of the Highland main line.

The Macfarlane 7 drinking fountain is one of only two that remain in Scotland and was created at the world-famous Saracen Foundry in Glasgow.

It has been restored to its former glory and will now have pride of place at the station, alongside a railway-inspired floral display and a photographic exhibition.

The revamp is the result of a partnership formed by Pitlochry in Bloom, Highland Railway Heritage, First ScotRail and the 150 Years on Track Steering Group.

Sally Spaven, of Pitlochry in Bloom, said: “Our work has been aided by a grant of £25,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“The restoration of the magnificent water fountain was funded by the Railway Heritage Trust and Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust.

“It’s an amazing centrepiece and we’re honoured to have it here in Pitlochry.”

The celebrations ended with an evening ceilidh at the Atholl Palace Hotel.
