A musical which started life at Dundee Rep before being turned into the feelgood film of the year is to be tackled by an amateur cast for the first time.

The UK’s first amateur production of the acclaimed musical Sunshine on Leith will be presented by a new musical theatre company from Perth.

Ad Lib Theatre Arts, in collaboration with Perth College UHI, will bring the show, featuring hit songs from The Proclaimers, to the Fair City early next year.

Sunshine on Leith follows the highs and lows of friends Ally and Davy as they return home from the army.

Rehearsals are under way with a cast of talented local performers taking on the award-winning musical written by Stephen Greenhorn. Among the well-known Proclaimers hits arranged for the show by Hilary Brooks are Let’s Get Married, I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and the much-loved title song.

Ad Lib creative director Victoria Rice explained how the group got permission to put on the production.

“Sunshine on Leith was one of the musicals our group was most interested in performing,” she said.

“I contacted Stephen Greenhorn’s agent on the off chance, to see if the rights were available and things went from there.

“We’re all really keen to take on the challenge of putting the show together and being the first amateur group to perform it is just incredible.”

Sunshine on Leith will be performed in late January 2014, at Perth College UHI.
