Ryder Cup captains in Scotland to mark one year until Gleneagles showdown

US legend Tom Watson will be the United States' captain next September.
US legend Tom Watson will be the United States' captain next September.

The Ryder Cup captains are to tee off the countdown to the start of the famous golf tournament with a series of events today.

European leader Paul McGinley will be joined by US captain Tom Watson and the Ryder Cup trophy on a trip from Edinburgh to Gleneagles, where the tournament will be played next year.

The team competition starts on September 26 2014 but the players will be practising on the course in front of fans three days earlier.

The captains will board a specially-commissioned locomotive train at Edinburgh’s Waverley station today and head off to Gleneagles, where they will play nine holes of the competition course with 18 junior golfers.

They will later take part in a question-and-answer session in Perth where they will meet golf fans.

With the “Year To Go” celebrations beginning, the captains will be able to see how the Ryder Cup has grown to be viewed as the biggest golf event in the world.

Watson and McGinley will be joined by a number of celebrity ambassadors and keen golfers throughout the day, including former footballers Alan Hansen and Ruud Gullit, model Jodie Kidd and actor James Nesbitt, to promote the event.

Nesbitt said: “Golf is one of my lifelong passions and I always find an excuse to hit the course between filming or share tips with fellow golf fans.

“I’m very proud to be an ambassador for the 2014 Ryder Cup and take part in what is the greatest event on the golf calendar.

“It will be an amazing week, not just for Scotland, but for golf fans across Europe.”
