The workforce of a Coupar Angus chicken factory have been told to expect job losses.
Consultations have started with the 650 workers at the 2 Sisters plant to cut jobs, partly as a result in a drop in demand for chicken.
Just last montha 2 Sisters spokesman told The Courier moves to consolidate its production estate did not affect the company’s sites in Scotland, which also includes a smaller chicken processing unit at Letham in Angus.
Perthshire North MSP John Swinney is to meet with the management and unions today to hear more about the situation facing the plant.
“This is a very serious blow to employment in Coupar Angus, with the prospect of job losses at the 2 Sisters plant and the workforce are very much in my thoughts at this difficult time,” he said.
“The fact that this comes so soon after the acquisition of the plant by 2 Sisters is a real concern. I have discussed the situation already with the management of the company and they have explained that a decline in market conditions has resulted in there being too much capacity within chicken plants.
“Unfortunately, that has resulted in jobs losses at Coupar Angus.”
