An aircraft engineering degree course is flying high after scooping official accreditation from the Royal Aeronautical Society.

The award for Perth College’s course comes after Princess Anne visited the college’s Dunne Aeronautical Laboratory earlier this year.

The recognition will benefit students on the BEng (Hons) degree in aircraft engineering at incorporated engineer level (IEng).

Accreditation means the degree meets standards set by the Engineering Council.

Professor Andrew Rae, head of curriculum for engineering, science and technology said: “The accreditation committee studied background information and evidence and this major recognition is a credit to all the aircraft engineering staff involved.

“I am particularly delighted that evidence provided by our students was very positive and was highlighted in the report.

“Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries.

“This will improve the employment opportunities for our graduates and gives us a solid footing for future development.”

Dr Thomas Moore, principal and chief executive of Perth College UHI said: “This is a wonderful achievement and a significant accolade for our staff and to those of our students undertaking this programme.”

The accreditation was also welcomed by Perthshire North MSP John Swinney.

He said: “This validation underscores the depth of intellectual engineering capability available within air service training (AST) at Perth College.

“AST is a significant asset in Scotland and they have realised a steady increase in student numbers here. This latest achievement will assist in this drive and help AST continue delivering real opportunities for young engineers.”
