The first T-in-the-Parkers arrive on-site.

A record 35,000 revellers descended on Balado as the gates opened on the first day of T in the Park.

An estimated 85,000 people will watch a host of bands each day over this weekend, including headliners Mumford and Sons, Rihanna and the Killers.

Shuttle buses left Perth bus station with fans expressing their excitement at travelling to the festival.

Aimee Longworth, 21, said: “This will be my first time at the festival and I can’t wait to see all my favourite bands, especially Rihanna.”

Donna Melrose, 25, said: “I’m really excited about going to the festival and I hope the warm weather continues. I’m sure it will be a brilliant weekend.”

Peter Ogilvie, 30, said: “It will be a magic festival and I’m looking forward to having a good time.”

Festival director Geoff Ellis was there to open the campsite gates on Thursday and he gave the first 20 fans to enter the campsite a VIP upgrade in celebration of T in the Park’s 20th year.Photo gallery: Campers arrive for T in the ParkHe said: “Welcoming the first campers through the gates is my favourite moment of the festival every year. There was a phenomenal atmosphere today, and a great sense of excitement amongst the campers.

“The sun is shining, and it’s been a glorious start to our 20th year festivities.

“We hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and we can’t wait to celebrate the 20th year of T in the Park with the fans, who truly are the greatest audience in the world.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary celebrations and police have warned they are prepared for all eventualities, including using CCTV and helicopter if needed.

Superintendent Rick Dunkerley, event commander at T in the Park, said: “We all work together at T in the Park central command. There’s CCTV there and we can link up to the police helicopter. So the fire service, ambulance, security and all the other volunteers work together from a central nerve centre.

“This site is the same size as Stirling it’s the fifth biggest city in Scotland for the weekend and we need to respond to incidents quickly.”

Police issued a warning to revellers that smoke canisters, smoke pellets and flares will not be tolerated at the event after stewards confiscated five smoke pellets as another one was let off outside the venue.

They have also issued repeated warnings to festival fans to avoid drugs, after a batch of fake ecstasy tablets were linked to a number of recent deaths in Scotland.
