Speeding sentence leaves former St Johnstone striker three points from losing licence

Gregory Tade failed to appear in court but admitted the offence.

Former St Johnstone star Gregory Tade was sentenced in his absence after failing to appear at court for a second time.

The striker was due to face charges of speeding in his £35,000 sports car on the A9 last September. But instead of appearing at Perth Sheriff Court the Frenchman was in Vienna training with his new side, Romanian club CFR Cluj.

Previously the 26-year-old had missed an appearance after his lawyers “forgot” to tell him about it and he went on holiday to France instead.

However, he has now admitted the offence and the case was disposed of in his absence. Depute fiscal Carol Whyte said Tade had been caught by a roadside speed camera positioned on the A9 near Tibbermore.

Images from the camera showed Tade’s Mercedes E220 was travelling at 90mph in a 70mph limit at 2.20pm on September 6 last year.

Peter Malone, defending, said Tade, who already had six points on his licence, had “allowed his speed to creep up” the limit but that he was “very, very sorry”.

He added that his client, whose address was given to the court as Cornhill Gardens, Perth, would have to be “very careful” when driving from now on.

Another three points could see the footballer lose his licence under the totting up procedure.

On Thursday, Justice of the Peace Christine Grant ordered that his licence be endorsed with three penalty points and fined him £120. He has 28 days to pay the fine.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was also due to appear at Perth Sheriff Court on similar charges.

The 42-year-old is alleged to have been driving at 83mph in a 70mph zone near Blackford in October last year.

Lawyers acting for Lennon asked Ms Grant to postpone a July 9 trial to later in the year because he is due to be in Germany with the club at that time. He will now stand trial in September.
