Three months’ detention for teenager who stole phones from youths

A young man who stole mobile phones from two children has been sentenced to three months’ detention.

Michael Czekalla (18), of Hermitage Drive, Perth, admitted at Perth Sheriff Court that on October 4 last year he assaulted a child in Raeburn Park, Perth, by threatening him with violence, pushing him to the ground to his injury, and robbing him of his mobile phone.

He also admitted that on October 9 last year he stole a mobile phone in Milne Street, Perth.

The court had previously heard that Czekalla threatened to “batter” the boy in Raeburn Park and, when the youngster stood up to him, the accused shoved him to the ground.

Regarding the second charge, depute fiscal Robbie Brown told the court Czekalla was on a bus from Mill Street to Tweedsmuir Road, Perth.

“The accused asked to use a 14-year-old child’s phone and the complainer eventually got it back,” he said. “However, once off the bus, the accused shouted ‘I’ve been inside and done time and will cut your throat’ to the boy.”

Solicitor Billy Sommerville, defending, said his client had taken valium and temazepam at the time of the later crime.

Sentencing Czekalla, Sheriff Michael Fletcher described him as an “enigma”.

The sentence was backdated to February 21.
