Reports of explosions at a Stirling business sparked a major emergency response.
Witnesses described hearing “loud bangs” coming from the premises of Superglass Insulation on the Thistle Industrial Estate at around 1.40am on Tuesday.
Units from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene, where they discovered six arctic lorry trailers containing glass wool insulation well alight.
An initial investigation by firefighters found there was no danger to the factory building, which lies next to one of the city’s main railway lines.
A spokeswoman from the fire service told The Courier: “It appears that the glass fibre had made a noise similar to an explosion as it caught fire.
“We weren’t sure whether or not it came from the building but it turned out to be contained within six trailers.
“Fortunately, these were quite far away from the building, although a few cars parked nearby did suffer slight damage from flying glass.
“The trailers were not attached to any tractor units they were sitting by themselves and they have all been destroyed by the fire.”
Two appliances attended from Stirling, as well as a retained appliance from Dunblane and a water carrier unit from Larbert.
In total, 15 firefighters tackled the blaze for more than three hours. They finally extinguished the flames at 5am, although an appliance remained on the scene for most of the morning dampening down.
An investigation is now ongoing into the cause of the fire.
Chief operations officer at Superglass, John Invinson, said there was “no cause for concern” and confirmed business would continue as usual at the manufacturing facility.
“The trailer fire damaged five other trailers within the trailer park,” he said. “There were no injuries or damage, other than trailers.
“The manufacturing facility and our ability to service customers are unaffected by the incident. A full investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire.”
