Perth mother tells how donor saved her life

Claire Riley is helping spread the word about how organ donation helped save her life and become a mum.
Claire Riley is helping spread the word about how organ donation helped save her life and become a mum.

A Perth mother is at the forefront of a new campaign urging people to become organ donors.

Claire Riley (36) faced death before her liver transplant.

She is one of a dozen parents on a national tour with the NHS Organ Donor Register to show how the selfless actions of donors can transform lives by highlighting the role organ donation has played in allowing them to live healthy lives and have families.

Full-time mum Claire underwent a successful liver transplant in 2004 after developing the chronic liver disease sclerosis cholangitis aged just 27.

Following the lifesaving operation, Claire’s life has been completely transformed and she has been able to go on and have a family of her own Harrison (6) and Blair (3).

She said: “I very much doubt that I would have the life or family I do now without the NHS Organ Donor Register.

“In fact, just before my transplant, I was incredibly ill, weighing just 6 stone and with severe jaundice.

“I hardly had a life at all. But once my new liver kicked in, I started to feel so much better.

“It was so different. I had so much more strength and it felt like I had a new lease of life.

“Someone sadly had to pass away for me to live but I am so thankful to that person for making the selfless decision to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and be able to save me.

“Being given such an incredible gift really has allowed me to live a full life and I have been lucky enough to go on and have a family of my own.

“My two young sons bring me so much joy and I now have the energy and health to be a hands-on mum, which is something I never take for granted and never will.

“I would encourage everyone to talk about organ donation with their loved ones today and consider joining the NHS Organ Donor Register. It really is a decision which can save lives.”

More than two million Scots are on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
