One of the most historic places of worship in Scotland is undergoing work after some of its masonry fell.

Dunkeld Cathedral, which dates from 1318, is being repaired due to health and safety reasons.

The building was partly destroyed during the Reformation (1560). The Choir of the Cathedral was reroofed in 1600 to serve as the parish church.

The cathedral’s nave and tower is preserved as an ancient monument in the care of Historic Scotland, which is also responsible for the grounds.

A spokesman for Historic Scotland said: ”There is scaffolding within the section of Dunkeld Cathedral cared for by Historic Scotland, to allow access for masonry consolidation following stone falls. For health and safety reasons, it is necessary to close access to this open-roofed part of the cathedral.

”The grounds remain open and there is access to the carved stone display in the Bell Tower. Access to the roofed part of the cathedral cared for by the Church of Scotland remains open.”
