Dunkeld tragedy adds to A9’s deadly toll

A young woman was killed in an accident on the A9 north of Dunkeld on Saturday.

She died when her vehicle, which was heading north, ploughed into a stationary lorry in a layby.

The collision happened around 3.30pm and involved a grey Honda Civic and a white lorry.

”The female deceased, aged in her 20s, was the driver, and only occupant of the car,” Tayside Police said. ”The road was closed in both directions and diversions put in place.”

The woman’s family have been informed but her identity has not been released.

Police crash investigators and specialist officers were assisted at the scene by four fire units, including the heavy rescue vehicle from Perth.

The tragedy also caused chaos for motorists, with roads through Dunkeld and Birnam grinding to a halt as traffic was diverted for the rest of the day.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222.

The accident comes only days after Perth and North Perthshire MP Pete Wishart described the A9 as a ”chaotic and dangerous road”.

He was speaking on Thursday at the SNP conference in Perth about the Scottish Government’s pledge to dual the entire length of the road.

In the last six years almost 80 people have been killed on the A9.
