Nan McMahon, former Wren and Dundee newsagent

Former Dundee newsagent Agnes (Nan) McMahon died peacefully at Menzieshill House at the age of 95.

Born in August 1920, Nan grew up in Dumfries and Galloway and would often recount her memories of helping her father, a shepherd, tend newborn lambs on the hillsides.

Following a short period in domestic service, Nan joined the Wrens and served on HMS Glendower in the Second World War, during which time she was proud to feed Prince Philip.

On demob, Nan attended catering school in Edinburgh and embarked on a second career, this time in industrial catering, working for Commercial Catering in Edinburgh.

It was this new career that would take her to Dundee in 1947 when Commercial Catering asked her to move to the city to look after its canteen at Robb Caledon. This role then included Pitalpin Works, Lochee, Timex Harrison Road and NCR Camperdown. It was Nan’s skill in food preparation that would win her the heart of George McMahon, who worked at NCR Camperdown. Nan and George were married in September 1952. In November 1953 Nan stopped working to raise a family, daughter Lynda, followed by son Derek.

In 1974 Nan embarked an another career, this time as a newsagent, joining Kathleen McMahon, her sister-in-law, as a partner in T McMahon. When Kathleen died in 1976 Nan became the sole proprietor, with husband George joining her, until she retired and sold the business in 1994.

So it was for 20 years that the local community on Ann Street came to know Nan as their local newsagent and friend.

Retirement saw Nan and George travel frequently and spend many holidays in Cyprus. In 2002 George died shortly after the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Nan kept her interest in her garden and would talk to many neighbours passing the family home on Sutherland Place and admiring her handiwork.

Nan is survived by Lynda, Derek, son-in-law Graeme, grandson Stuart and his wife Emma, and her four great-grandchildren, Ellie, Andrew, Thomas and Isla.
